Gifts for your mother-in-law: 19 birthday and Christmas ideas
The best gift for your mother-in-law is something for her, not for the house. Ask your partner what their mom uses every day and give her a better version of it. Budget up to €25 for her name day, €50-150 for a birthday or Christmas, and a joint family gift for a milestone birthday.
A gift for your mother-in-law is one of those purchases where it’s easy to get stuck. You want it to be personal, but not too personal. Elegant, but not showy. And ideally one that won’t end up in the closet next to last year’s towel set. The good news is that mothers-in-law are happy about the same things as everyone else: attention, and things they would never buy themselves.
For twelve years on “Pani Gadżet”, my own show on Polish TV, I showed which gifts really stay in use and which end up in a box. I founded the SkinVibe brand, so in this guide you’ll also find our devices, always marked as ours. Next to them are ideas that have nothing to do with us, because not every mother-in-law needs a new hair dryer.
IN SHORT
- The best gift for your mother-in-law is something for her, not for the house. A pot or a vacuum cleaner is a chore, and a gift should be a pleasure.
- Ask your partner what their mom uses every day. A gift that replaces a worn-out item with a better version is the surest hit.
- Match the budget to the occasion: a small gift up to €25 for her name day, €50-150 for a birthday or Christmas, and a joint gift from the whole family for a milestone birthday.
- Hair tools work well when they are light and quiet. With mature, finer hair, a low temperature matters too.
- Skip gifts that point to her age, and mother-in-law jokes. Anti-wrinkle creams and funny mugs rarely bring as much joy as it seems at the checkout.
How do you choose a gift for your mother-in-law that really hits the mark?
The surest hit is a gift that replaces something your mother-in-law uses every day with a better version of it. Instead of guessing what she might like, ask your partner what their mom has been complaining about lately, what has broken and what she has said she’ll “buy herself one day”. That’s usually a three-minute conversation, and the end of buying blind.
The second rule: the gift should be for her, not for cleaning her kitchen or bathroom. Mothers-in-law get a surprising number of things for the home and very few things just for themselves. The third rule: one good-quality item is better than a basket of small things. Women over sixty often already have plenty of everything and appreciate what stays with them for years.
If you’re buying together with your partner’s siblings, agree in advance who gives what. You’ll avoid two pairs of gloves under one Christmas tree, and with a joint gift you can go for something no one would buy alone.
Gifts for your mother-in-law under €25
In this budget, small things with a personal touch work best, and so do things used every day, but in a better version than usual. It’s a good range for her name day, Mother’s Day or a gesture for no particular reason. What counts is the idea: a photo of the grandchildren in a quality frame will bring more joy than a random set of beauty products from a sale.
1. PonyGadget for ponytails and buns (ours). A small, light insert made of antistatic nylon that goes under the hair tie and lifts a ponytail or bun at the roots. If your mother-in-law wears her hair up but complains that it looks flat, it’s a small gift that works from day one. PonyGadget comes in two sizes and three colors to match her hair.
2. A photo book or a frame with photos of the grandchildren. A classic that works because it’s personal. Choose a few photos from the past year and add dates or short captions under them.
3. Good tea or coffee with a cup. If your mother-in-law has her own morning ritual, make a gift of it: a tin of tea or whole-bean coffee from a small roastery, and one really beautiful cup.
4. A luxury hand cream or body lotion. Something used every day but rarely bought for oneself in a better version. Choose a delicate scent, or an unscented one if you don’t know her preferences.
5. A plant in an elegant pot. For a mother-in-law who loves greenery at home, it’s a gift that grows along with your relationship. Just check that she has room on the windowsill.
Gifts for your mother-in-law under €75
Under €75 you can already buy something that will really make everyday life easier or bring pleasure for longer. It’s the most common budget for birthdays and Christmas when the gift is from the two of you. In this range it’s worth going for one really good thing instead of a few smaller ones, and adding a few words of your own on a card.
6. A mini straightener for short hair and bangs (our Luna MiniWireless). Many women over sixty wear short haircuts and bangs, and for hair like that a big straightener is simply unwieldy. Luna MiniWireless is 22 cm long, weighs 220 g, heats up in 15 seconds and starts at 165°C, which matters with finer hair. It works without a cord, so it’s also handy when traveling. You’ll find more about when a small straightener makes sense in my guide to the mini straightener for short hair.
7. A light mini hair dryer (our Nova PlasmaGo). For a mother-in-law who travels a lot, goes to health resorts or simply struggles with a heavy hair dryer. Nova PlasmaGo weighs 310 g, runs quietly at 59 dB and has plasma, which reduces static. It comes in three colors: Blue Fog, Eggplant and Graphite.
8. Tickets to the theater, the philharmonic or the movies, ideally with you. An outing together is a double gift: the event and time with the family. Choose a play or a concert she has mentioned.
9. A warm scarf or blanket made of good wool. Something soft for winter evenings that will remind her of you every day. Go for a natural material and a calm color.
10. A voucher for a massage or a beauty treatment. An hour just for herself is something many moms and grandmas deny themselves. Choose a salon close to her home, so getting there isn’t an excuse.
Gifts for your mother-in-law under €150
Up to €150 you’ll find gifts that last for years: devices used every day, and shared experiences. It’s a good budget for a milestone birthday from the two of you, or for Christmas when you chip in with your partner’s siblings. With hair tools, the key things are weight, noise level and the option of drying at a lower temperature.
11. A hair dryer with ionization and a diffuser (our Libra AirLoom). Libra AirLoom has four temperature ranges, three airflow speeds, ionization and three magnetic nozzles, including a classic diffuser that comes in handy for waves and perms. It weighs 420 g, so it doesn’t tire her hand. If your mother-in-law dries her hair every day with an old, loud hair dryer, she’ll feel the difference from the very first time.
12. A steam straightener (our Astra SteamPlasma). For a mother-in-law who straightens her hair or curls the ends. Astra SteamPlasma starts at 140°C, has steam and plasma, and switches itself off after 30 minutes of continuous use, which gives the whole family peace of mind on distracted mornings.
13. A device plus PonyGadget (ours). You can add a PonyGadget with hair ties to the same order as Libra, Astra or Aurea. For a mother-in-law who wears her hair up, that makes one complete gift instead of two separate ones. Sizes and colors are on the PonyGadget page.
14. A day at the spa together. Invite her for a day at a hotel spa, just the two of you or with her daughter. In a relationship that is still taking shape, time spent together brings you closer than the most expensive thing.
15. An e-reader with a large font. For a mother-in-law who reads a lot but whose eyes get tired from small print. You can set the font size however you like, and a whole library fits in her purse. When you give it, help her set it up and load the first few books.
Gifts for your mother-in-law over €150: from the whole family
Over €150, the gift is most often a joint one, from the children and grandchildren together. It’s a chance to give something your mother-in-law would never buy herself, because it’s “a waste of money on myself”. Choose something that will last for years and brings the family together, such as a device the grandchildren will use too, or a trip together.
16. A hair dryer for the whole family (our Aurea Family x Plasma). Our flagship model and a gift that makes particular sense for a grandma whose grandchildren come to visit. Aurea Family x Plasma has seven modes, including a children’s mode with a temperature of up to 65°C, runs quietly at 59 dB and weighs 410 g. Plasma, 1 billion positive and negative ions per cubic centimeter, helps tame fine hair that gets static. A touch sensor stops the airflow when you put the dryer down, and a wavy diffuser comes in the box.
New: hair dryer, curling iron and brush in one (our Nuvia AirPlasma). For a mother-in-law who likes to look as if she has just been to the hairdresser but doesn’t want three devices in the bathroom. Nuvia AirPlasma has seven attachments on one body, including two curling barrels and two brushes, and styles with air of up to 90°C instead of a barrel with its own heating element or hot plates. The Round Brush lifts hair at the roots and turns the ends under even on chin-length hair, and holding a button gives a cold shot that sets the style. It comes in a box that is ready to give. Who is it for? For a mother-in-law who loves new gadgets and has the patience for the first few tries. If she values simplicity and quiet, Aurea from the point above will suit her better. I’ve also described how to use a hot air styler.
17. A family photo shoot. Professional photos with her children and grandchildren are a gift that will be priceless in a few years. Book a photographer outdoors or at your mother-in-law’s home, where she feels at ease.
18. A weekend in a place she has talked about. A spa town, the mountains, the city of her youth. Book the accommodation and the travel, so she doesn’t have to organize anything herself.
19. Jewelry in precious metal. Classic earrings or a delicate chain are a gift for years. If you don’t know her style, ask your partner whether she wears gold or silver, and go for a simple design.
Is a hair dryer a good gift for your mother-in-law?
Yes, if your mother-in-law dries her hair regularly and her current hair dryer is heavy, loud or too hot. For a woman over sixty, three things matter: lightness, quiet operation and the option of drying at a lower temperature, because hair gets finer with age. But don’t buy a hair dryer for someone who has a new one and likes it.
For reference: comfortable hair dryers usually weigh between 400 and 650 g, and the quietest ones run below 70 dB. It’s also worth choosing one with a brushless motor, because it’s powerful while weighing little. For fine and gray hair, ionization or plasma works well, because both reduce static and frizz. We’ve put all the specifications of our hair dryers side by side on the comparison page.
In the reviews of our Aurea there’s a recurring theme that shows well who this hair dryer is for: “I bought a second one as a gift for my granddaughter!”. If you don’t know which model suits your mother-in-law’s hair, answer a few questions for her in our device-matching quiz. It takes about a minute and a half.
Gifts for your mother-in-law for her birthday, name day and Christmas
The occasion suggests the budget and the kind of gift. For her name day, a small gift and flowers are enough; for a birthday or Christmas, a gift from the two of you in the €50-150 range; and for a milestone birthday, a sixtieth or seventieth, a joint gift from the whole family. Under the tree, things she can enjoy at home work well, such as a blanket or an e-reader.
For her 60th birthday, gifts that show life is only just getting going work well: a weekend away, a good hair tool, jewelry. For her 70th birthday, family gifts bring the most joy: a photo book, a photo shoot, a family lunch at a good restaurant. For Christmas, things to use in winter and outings together after New Year work well. On Mother’s Day, remember that your mother-in-law is a mom too, so a small gesture from you will be noticed. If you’re also looking for something for the younger members of the family, I’ve put together guides to gifts for your sister and gifts for a teenage girl.
| Budget | Safe choice | If you know her well |
|---|---|---|
| up to €25 | hand cream, good tea with a cup | photo book with the grandchildren, PonyGadget |
| up to €75 | wool scarf, massage voucher | tickets for an outing together, mini straightener |
| up to €150 | spa day, e-reader | light ionic hair dryer, steam straightener |
| over €150 | family photo shoot | weekend away, plasma hair dryer for the whole family |
What shouldn’t you buy your mother-in-law?
The most common blunders are gifts that say something about age or chores rather than about her. Anti-wrinkle creams, bathroom scales, cleaning equipment and mugs with mother-in-law jokes can spoil the mood more than it seems at the checkout. Be careful, too, with clothes and perfume bought blind, because size and scent are very personal matters.
- Beauty products “for her age”. Even the best cream labeled “anti-age” is a comment, not a gift.
- Things for cleaning and cooking, unless she asked for them herself. A new mop is a gift for the floor.
- Mother-in-law jokes. Funny in a group chat with friends, rarely when you hand over the gift.
- Clothes in a size you’ve guessed. Guessing sizes can hurt both ways.
- Perfume without doing your homework. If you don’t know what she wears, a perfumery voucher is better.
- A device she already has and likes. Before you buy a hair dryer, find out what she dries her hair with today.
How should you wrap the gift, and when should you order it?
Order a Christmas gift with time to spare, ideally in November or early December, because couriers have the most work before Christmas. Check the return conditions, and whether there will be a price in the parcel if you’re sending the gift straight to your mother-in-law. An elegant bag or box makes the first impression before anyone looks inside. If your wife or best friend is also on your Christmas list, I’ve written up ideas for them separately: gifts for your wife for Christmas and gifts for your best friend.
We deliver to Germany, Czechia and Slovakia, usually within 2-4 working days. If the gift is meant to be under the tree, order early. You can add a gift bag in black or white to a hair dryer or straightener. You have 30 days from receiving the parcel to return it, even after trying the device on your hair. Orders placed from 15 November to 24 December can be returned until 15 January, so your mother-in-law can test the gift at her leisure after the holidays. Every device comes with a two-year warranty. You’ll find our devices arranged by budget in our collection of gifts for her.
Frequently asked questions about gifts for your mother-in-law
What to get your mother-in-law as a gift?
Ideally a better version of something she uses every day, or a pleasure she denies herself: a good hair tool, a massage, a wool scarf, tickets to an outing together. Before you buy, ask your partner what has broken at their mom’s lately or what she has mentioned. A gift like that hits the mark far more reliably than an idea from a bestseller list.
What to get a mother-in-law who has everything?
An experience instead of a thing: a trip together, a spa day, a photo shoot with the grandchildren or concert tickets. If you prefer a thing, look for an upgrade, not a novelty, such as a lighter and quieter hair dryer in place of the old one. Women who have everything usually don’t have things chosen to suit them, only things they once bought in a hurry.
What to get your mother-in-law for her 60th birthday?
Something that shows this is a good time, not a “round number”: a weekend in a place she has talked about, jewelry in precious metal or a really good device she uses every day, such as a light hair dryer with ionization or plasma. For a sixtieth, a gift from the whole family works well, because it lets you go for something no one would buy alone.
What to get your mother-in-law for her 70th birthday?
For a seventieth, gifts that are both family-centered and practical bring the most joy: a photo book with the grandchildren, a professional photo shoot, a family lunch or a trip organized from A to Z. If you choose a thing, go for lightness and simple operation, such as an e-reader with a large font or a light, quiet hair dryer with a few simple settings.
What to get your mother-in-law for her 80th birthday?
For an eightieth, time and presence bring the most joy: a family lunch at her home, an album with photos of several generations that you look through together, regular visits. If you choose a thing, make it soft, warm or very simple to use: a blanket, warm slippers or a light, quiet hair dryer that doesn’t tire her hand.
What to get your mother-in-law for Christmas?
Under the tree, things just for her work well, not for cleaning or cooking, ideally to use in winter: a wool scarf, a soft blanket, an e-reader, a spa day or a light, quiet hair dryer if her current one is loud and heavy. For Christmas a gift from the two of you is usually enough, and for a bigger one chip in with your partner’s siblings. Order early: we deliver to Germany, Czechia and Slovakia, usually within 2-4 working days.
How much should you spend on a gift for your mother-in-law?
There’s no single amount, but a simple rule works well: up to €25 for her name day, €50-150 from the two of you for a birthday or Christmas, and more for a milestone birthday, ideally as a joint gift with your partner’s siblings. More important than the amount is that the gift is thoughtful and suited to her, not to the occasion.
Should you give your mother-in-law a gift from the two of you or from the whole family?
For everyday occasions and her name day, a gift from the two of you is perfectly enough. For milestone birthdays and bigger holidays, it’s worth chipping in with your partner’s siblings, because then you can buy something really valuable instead of several similar small things. Just agree in advance who is buying what, so the gifts don’t double up.
Finally, one thing that always works: add a few handwritten words of your own to the gift. A handwritten card often stays in a drawer for years, long after the gift itself has worn out.
