For twelve years on “Pani Gadżet”, my own show on Polish TV, I tested so many hair dryers from so many brands that I knew exactly what I was missing in them. Four simple rules help. First, listen all year round. Moms rarely say “I want”, but they often say “this hair dryer barely blows anymore” or “one day I’ll go to that spa town”. Second, the gift should be for her, not for the kitchen. Third, one good thing beats a basket of small things, because it stays in use for years. Fourth, agree on it with your siblings. It’s a good budget for St. Nicholas Day, her name day or a small extra to a bigger gift from the siblings. What counts is the idea: a calendar with photos of the grandchildren will bring more joy than a random set of beauty products from a sale.

Under €75 you can buy your mom something she will use every day, or a treat she will remember for longer. It’s a good budget for Christmas and birthdays when the gift is from one person or a couple.

Gifts for mom under €150: one good gift instead of three

Up to €150 you’ll find gifts that last for years: devices your mom uses every day, and shared experiences. It’s a good budget for Christmas or a birthday when the gift is from two people, for example from you and your partner or from two siblings. If you’re choosing a hair tool, check three things: how much it weighs, whether your mom can use it without the manual, and whether she can dry her hair with cooler air.

12. A light hair dryer with ionization (our Libra AirLoom). Libra AirLoom weighs 420 g and has four temperature ranges, from cool air up to 90°C, three speeds and a touch screen. When all the siblings chip in, the easiest option is a joint gift from all the children together. It’s a chance for something your mom would never decide on herself. Choose something that will last for years and that everyone who comes to her for the holidays will use too.

A hair dryer as a gift for your mom: when yes and when no

A hair dryer is a good gift for a mom who dries her hair regularly and whose current hair dryer is heavy, loud or too hot. But don’t buy one for a mom who has a new one she likes, or for one who only has her hair dried at the hairdresser’s. Before you decide, find out what she dries her hair with now and what bothers her about it.

When choosing a device for your mom, look at three things. The first is weight, because when you dry your hair for a long time with a raised arm, the shoulder tires quickly. The second is simple operation: the fewer buttons to remember, the more willingly your mom will reach for the gift. The third is temperature: with fine and colored hair, it’s better to dry with warm rather than hot air. In the reviews of our hair dryers, a few remarks keep coming up that are worth knowing before you give one. The buttons on the handle of Aurea and Libra are sensitive, and it’s easy to switch modes with them while drying, so show your mom where to hold her hand. The cord is 2.7 m long, which makes it easier to dry at a mirror far from the socket, but it’s quite thick, and during long styling you can feel its weight.

What not to buy your mom, and when to order a Christmas gift

The most common blunders are gifts that say something about chores or age rather than about her. Cleaning and cooking equipment, a cream labeled “anti-age” and bathroom scales can spoil the mood more than it seems at the checkout. Be careful, too, with clothes and perfume bought blind.

• Things for the house “for her”. Only give a mop or a pot if your mom asked for one herself.
• Beauty products “for her age”. Your mom can easily read an anti-wrinkle cream as a comment on her age.
• Clothes in a size you’ve guessed. A scarf, a blanket or slippers in a size checked in her closet are a safer bet.
• Perfume without doing your homework. Scent is a very personal choice, so if you don’t know her favorite, give a perfumery voucher and let your mom choose for herself.
• A device she already has and likes. Ask casually what she dries her hair with and whether she’s happy with that hair dryer.
